Potassium is a mineral component, the right amount of which is necessary for the proper functioning of the body. The main sources of this mineral are fruits and vegetables – e.g. potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, bananas, apples and dried apricots and plums. It can also be easily supplemented by eating beans or legumes (e.g. beans and lentils), dairy products (e.g. yoghurt), fish, meat and nuts. Consumed potassium is absorbed mainly in the small intestine in about 90%, which makes it relatively easy to maintain its proper concentration in cells ^[1].

Hypokalaemia, or potassium deficiency, can cause a number of distressing symptoms e.g.: constipation, fatigue, muscle weakness and general malaise. In a more advanced stage, breathing difficulties, polyuria and cardiac arrhythmias may occur ^{[1, 4]}.
