Finding your way around health supplements
Vitamins and minerals is where most people start: multivitamins, vitamin D, vitamin C, B vitamins, zinc, iron and magnesium in its different forms (magnesium glycinate is the one people ask for most, and citrate the next). Brands include Swanson, Life Extension, NOW, Cytoplan and Solgar.
Antioxidants covers CoQ10 and ubiquinol, turmeric and curcumin, NAC, glutathione, resveratrol, quercetin and milk thistle. Omega-3 and oils has fish oil, krill oil, cod liver oil, flaxseed and CLA.
Mood and vitality is the calming end of things — ashwagandha, rhodiola, 5-HTP, GABA, valerian and magnesium powders like Natural Vitality Calm. Immune support pulls together vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and elderberry. There are also smaller sections for women's health, vegan supplements and essential oils.
On what these do: we only use claims that are authorised in Great Britain. Vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc contribute to the normal function of the immune system. Magnesium and vitamin B12 contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. Ingredients like ashwagandha, CoQ10, turmeric and 5-HTP have no authorised claim, so for those we tell you what's in the bottle and leave it there.
Questions we get asked
How much magnesium a day? The UK reference intake is 375 mg. Most supplements give 100–400 mg per serving; the label will say. Magnesium is also in wholegrains, nuts, seeds and leafy greens, so a supplement tops up what you're already getting.
Magnesium glycinate or citrate? Both are well absorbed. Glycinate is gentler on the stomach and is the one most people search for; citrate is cheaper and has a mild laxative effect at higher doses.
Do I need a multivitamin? If your diet's varied, probably not. People take one as a backstop, or when they're eating badly for a stretch. A one-a-day like Swanson's Just One is the simplest option.
Which vitamin D? D3 is the form most supplements use and the one the NHS recommends everyone in the UK considers between October and March. 10 mcg (400 IU) a day is the standard adult dose.
Where does it ship from? Everything in this range is shipped from the UK.
