There is a lot of talk about the effects of vitamin D3, and there are sound reasons for this, as its deficiency may be present in up to 1 billion people worldwide, and adequate concentrations are key to maintaining health [1]. Obtaining a sufficient intake of vitamin D from the diet is virtually impossible, and dermal synthesis via the sun may be suboptimal. Recent recommendations suggest supplementing vitamin D even throughout the year while ensuring hydration and adequate calcium intake from the diet [1]. How much we should supplement depends, among other things, on age, gender, physiological status, health status, and the current concentration of the 25(OH)D parameter in the blood.
