Butyric acid, also known as butanoic acid, is a short-chain saturated fatty acid. In the human body, it is produced naturally as a result of the fermentation of undigested food components – primarily certain carbohydrates – by intestinal microorganisms. Its production is promoted by the presence in the diet of, among other things, resistant starch, inulin, and other types of fermentable fiber.
Butyric acid also occurs naturally in certain foods, including milk and dairy products; however, the amounts provided by a standard diet may be limited.
Direct consumption of free butyric acid may be unpleasant due to its characteristic, intense odor. For this reason, the OstroVit supplement uses calcium butyrate, which is the calcium salt of butyric acid. Unlike sodium butyrate, this compound does not provide sodium as an active ingredient. The form of enteric-coated microcapsules facilitates the delivery of the active ingredient to the small and large intestines, which enhances the supplement’s effectiveness and quality.
